Human Rights (.50 hr.), Legal Updates (.50 hr.), Officer wellness/mental health (1 hr.), Procedural Justice (1 hr.), De-escalation Techniques (1 hr.)Law enforcement officers have an important role to play in their interactions with community members. This includes responding to incidents with individuals who are suffering from mental health issues. This 8-hour course is developed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, is meant to provide law enforcement officers with an awareness of mental health issues including a history of the mental health system, types of mental illness including signs and symptoms, common treatments and medications. In keeping in line with the specialty CIT training course, this course also focuses on potential interactions law enforcement officers have on a regular basis with these individuals, their families and service providers including de-escalating a potential crisis situation.
