COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will provide instruction on the law enforcement response to sexual assault, with a focus on victim centered and trauma informed investigation. It will cover areas including proper initial law enforcement response; trauma and effects on the brain; victim advocacy; sexual assault myths and effects on the victim; victim and suspect interviewing; Illinois statutes; necessary tools for report writing, interviews, and evidence collection. Lastly it will use real case examples, interviews, and videos to corroborate the information provided, demonstrate the best practices, and provide the framework for the application of the procedures.
TRAINING TOPICS INCLUDE:
- Best practices on initial response to a sexual assault complaint.
- Misperceptions and myths about sexual victims and offenders.
- Neurobiology of the brain and how trauma affects memory and impacts a victim, their demeanor, and their ability to relay, recount, and report information.
- Interviewing techniques for victims and offenders.
- Ways to assist the victim through the investigation and criminal justice process.
- Effective investigative techniques.
